Initially when learning to play guitar students do occasionally find that they get very sore guitar fingers and that it can hurt!

The muscles in the hands have to alter and strengthen themselves to take up the position and movement demanded to hold the neck of the guitar and at the same time to place the fingers in the correct playing posture on the fretboard Then the lateral stretching of the fingers of the left hand required in moving between the guitar frets, and of the right hand gripping the pick over an extended period has to be got used to as well.

It will take a period of weeks of exercises to strengthen and stretch the muscles and tendons in the hands to diminish any aching or difficulty experienced in early practice sessions. It has to be accepted that there is a spell of adjustment to come through as you develop and maintain hand strength and it should not stifle early enthusiasm to learn to play the guitar.

Visiting a local sports shop will show you a selection of devices for building grip strength at a very modest cost. Clenching a soft rubber ball is also a productive exercise and can be done anywhere and anytime and delivers noticeable results.

A good exercise to strengthen tendons in the fingers is to put the hands together as you would in prayer. Increase the gap between your fingers as far as you can, now keeping the finger tips together move the palms away from each other while keeping pressure on the finger tips. This helps stretch the tendons in the fingers and open the fingers apart. This is definately a good exercise to do before a practice session on the guitar. Your beginner guitar lessons will be the better for it.

A very common challenge for new guitar students is that the finger tips of the left hand develop cracks and calluses from pressing on the guitar strings. There are many opinions on how best to deal with this problem but the best is surely to avoid them in the first place. Initially limit practice sessions to say only fifteen minutes at a time until your fingers have started to toughen up before you start to make the practice times any longer as this will help avoid any problem. It is often said that frequently applying a a small amount surgical spirit to the finger tips helps to toughen them up

If your finger tips do crack then some people are recommending the application of superglue or a product like Dermabond to seal cracks in the skin and this allows practice to go on almost uninterrupted. Of course it is really far more sensible if your fingers do begin to become sore to back off a while and encourage them to heal naturally before you play again

It is bound to take a while for hands and fingers to become accustomed to playing the guitar so the rule is to have patience and practice often but practice in short sessions. They do say – no pain, no gain. The joy to be derived from playing the guitar well is in the end worth it!
