Bass Guitar Pickup Covers

pickup scratched on bass?

Hi, I just got one yesturday down and I was trying some tapas in it last night. I play a little rough and never noticed anythign wrong in my guitar, but the pickup in the bass lines seem to be very weak, just below where the strings are, as the strings are scratching it, problems when I slap them (I play rough). Now the bass is a GRETSCH and his pickup seem to have a hood, I'm not too sure, so here's a picture: http://www.bass-guitar-museum.com/uploads/bass/1/250152871216-6.jpg alright this is my bass? I should lower the pickup? or not covering a sufficient protection and the risks are just normal?

lower it, yes …… will only lose a little volume. These coverages are, or soon will be available for replacement
