I live in CA, but about 2 hours away from there. My suggestion is to make the CDs of some songs that you would like to play, then find the tab for it and play along with the CD. You'll be surprised how fast you pick up on basic riffs. You may also want to get a basic book and learn pentatonic scale, major and minor scales. After a time, instead of using tablature, just listen and try to find out. This will build your ability to hear, which are essential for a bass, because they are the bridge between the melody of the guitars and the rhythm of drums. After getting the basics down, then go and try to get private lessons somewhere. This is because of you and the instructors.
