Where to get inexpensive wood for making a guitar?

I’m trying to make an electric bass guitar, and I need wood for the body. I would like to use alder, but everywhere I look, it’s like 50 bucks just for a body blank. All the cheap stuff is like boards and veneers, and those are much too thin for a guitar. Please help???
