What makes a guitar "classic"? The classical guitar is a traditional acoustic (nonelectric) instrument with six strings, but there are some models with eight or more. Both guitars and acoustic guitars have the same basic design and shape, have six strings, and are tuned in the same way. The main difference is the width of the fret board, which is much broader in classical guitar. The treble strings (high E, B and G) are usually made of nylon, the classical guitar, while all the strings of an acoustic guitar are made of metal. A classical guitarist uses his fingers to play instead of a pick.

The name of the classical guitar not mean that only classical pieces are performed on it, although classical music is an important part of the history of the guitar. Rather, all types of music (folk, jazz, flamenco, etc.) are played today.

In the 19th century, a guitarist, usually run as part of a series of small shows. Eventually, professional soloists would perform concerts for large audiences in larger spaces. Guitar manufacturers have begun to seek ways to make the guitar louder concert. This search, perhaps, began with the Spanish luthier Antonio Torres Jurado at the end of the 19th century.

Classical Guitar is sometimes called the guitar "Spanish" because Torres, working with Juilian Arcos, essentially redesigned the material, shape, and construction of guitar. Francisco Tarrega (1852 -1909) was a pioneer of new techniques employed by concert guitarists, including the positioning of the guitar in the left knee of the player, the correct positioning of hands, and methods to start the guitar (usually with the back of a nail).

Andres Segovia (1893-1987) took up the cause of the classical guitar or concert, and established innovative new methods make the guitar sound carry over large areas, such as concert halls. His techniques so beautifully demonstrated surprising flexibility of the guitar and its spectrum exceptional timbre and tone that many composers who had previously ignored the classical guitar began to write music specifically for her. Far from being possessive of their innovations, Segovia welcomed whatever improvements luthiers fellow could get to make the classical guitar, a stronger and more influential instrument.

The tone of the classical guitar embodies romance and deep emotion. Nylon strings produce sounds that are warm and mature expression. Eg flamenco, a style of playing classical guitar, is wonderfully expressive with its lively rhythms and colorful melodies. Classical guitar arrangements are often technically complicated, but extremely expressive and emotional, as a result.
